This was true when the 3g was released but they seem to tell you abit more now the 3gs is out and just a quick note for any one who thinks turning 3g off turns off the mobile network data you are wrong it just connects you to the slower 2g network which some companies charge more for when you use the net.
Are you sure you only use WiFi? Make sure you WiFi icon is active when downloading/browsing in the top left corner of the screen instead of the 3G or EDGE icon.
Also disable roaming data in Network settings, however I’m not sure if this is very effective, I’ve got mine disabled and when my phone switches to national roaming sometimes data is still active, could be a bug!!
Have you been going crazy with data, especially downloading Apps? If your carrier provides the ability to check usage, make sure you do so, otherwise try resetting the “Cellular Network Data” counter each month when your billing cycle restarts, while not 100% foolproof, it should give you a pretty good guide of how much data you have left on your plan.
Go to: Settings –> General –> Reset Statistics each month and you’ll know how much you’ve used
does anyone know how to avoid this? my internet bill is the bulk of how my phone bill is so high. (i only use my wifi)

Basically, yes. As long as you don’t exceed your plan’s data limit you shouldn’t be faced with bill shock.
If you have the option of using WiFi, do so as much as possible and save your 3G data for when there’s no WiFi.
Also if your carrier provides a facility to check how much data you’ve used throughout the month its worth checking every couple of days or after any larger downloads or video streaming sessions.

your stupid, its not Apple that was charging them 6-10 thousand dollars, it was the network. So if they got a different phone and did the exact same thing, it would cost the same.
i might be getting an iphone 2morow on a $59 cap unlimited txt messages and 700mb usage of internet per month im gonna ask about it 2 coz if i recieve a high bill ill yell my head off

it’s weird, I Have an iphone 3g and i always use 3g, i can even tell you that in 9 months i use only 3g of my iphone in my apartment, but never tethering, I use around 2 gb per month and never have an over charge, it’s weird, I never have fees or something.
Almost a year and most people still dont know about this stuff!!! Their not trying to help us aslong as somebody gets payed!!!!!!!
this is why you go “pay and go” with an “unlimited data plan.

i have a iphone 3g and most of the time if i go online with my iphone 3g it will be through wifi inever use edge or 3g but this one time i use my iphone about 5 mintes or less and yes i only did this once and the bill came up to $10 alone for excess data ussage i did not download apps with 3g or edge

cellphone/mobile phone contract operators are robbers,and con artists.What they get away with is pure robbery!I got stitched up here in the UK with an operator who sold me a plan with “unlimited data”,I got my first bill at £375.00!!!!I rang them up and told them there must be a big mistake!! and was told there was a fair useage policy and it was at the time capped at 30MB!!!(useless!!).I fought hard and got the bill dropped!!PLEASE EVERBODY GET THE FULL DETAILS IN WRITING!!
The bottom line is to not go crazy with your downloads and then there should be no problems!
I believe the guy with the massive bill from the UK started downloading while at home and then stopped the download when he flew to Germany and then didn’t realise that the download automatically resumed when he got reception again!
