I just bought a laptop, and am now going to university, which was the main purpose for buying it. Obviously, living away at university I will not have a fixed line, and I have no interest in a landline number if my phone works fine!
True, but I want to be able to connect to the Internet on my laptop, but how can I do that?
My cell phone contract with Orange pone, and I called her to ask if there is a reason why I could connect with my laptop, and she said there was no way this is possible (conflicting reports I have heard elsewhere!) I think cusomer the service is much to be desired anyway to be honest.
I've heard about these 3G cards and things, but I don t really understand, they encounter need someone to explain to me just ask.
I do not want to pay much more than 15-20 pounds per month, preferably less, and I need a decent deal, not like these 1mb things, the 20 pages per month! Can someone me any advice on what I need to get my start?

Though i am not a resident of UK but still can advice you…
Your laptop must be having a PCMCIA slot or a USB port. you can use the either for a internet connection without a landline.
For the PCMCIA slot, u will get a card that you will have to insert in the slot and it comes with an anteena.
For the USB port, u will get sonmething like a pen driove dort of thing that you can ise to connect to internet.
Pls check with your local internet prpovidered for these features….These devices will cost about INR 3000 to INR 5000 (41 INR = 1USD, calc the rest) and these will provide dial-up connection speed, i.e., less thanm 256kbps.
You may also use a Wi-Fi connection that is usually available in universities for free(check with yours).. That way you will be able to connect to internet without the use of any catrds or landlines….for this you need a wireless lan card in your laptop(as u have bought your recently so this feature might have come as a default)…
If your laptop does not have a W-lan card then you can go in for a option of USB W-lan card that provides you with all the features that an in built wireless card does. It costs around INR 500 to INR 600.
this offers a speed of 256kbps, upto 54mbps dependoing upon the internet provider.
you get a broadband connection with a w-lan card and dial-up connection with those two mentioned in the top.
T-Mobile Dongle!
Using cellphone networks for internet access is possible but it isn’t cheap and even the “unlimited” packages still come with a lot more restrictions than a normal fixed broadband package. One of the better value examples is http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Po… but at £25 per month with a 3GB per month usage cap its still pretty pricey and iirc they ban use of VOIP over it.
If you are going to be in university halls then the university will probablly provide some kind of access package (generally delivered over an ethernet port in your room) which will probablly be far cheaper and faster than commercial packages but will probablly be far less tollerant of users of things like bittorrent.
If you live in a shared house I strongly reccomend getting together with other occupants and sharing the cost of a phone line and broadband. When you split it between a few people it works out pretty cheap.
Some not all Universities have Wi-Fi Internet connections which you will have to pay for obviously as line rental. You will be given a code and will be told what modem to look for when setting up. You must make sure you Laptop is Wi-Fi enabled. Most :aptops are but depeding how old they are. If you set it up and it does not work then call the Internet provider as I had too when setting up WiFi on my Daughters laptop when she canme home from University. Oh by the way this is what she did when she went to Uni. Just check with the Uni when you go for your Freshers Week
your uni will probably have wi-fi it’s damn expensive connecting with mobile phones
You will be able to connect via the university’s Wi-Fi…
I think you can log onto other peoples wireless conections.
Getting interweb through your mobile will be slow and expensive. Your university will most likely have an internet connection (if you’re in halls of residence) whether wireless or ethernet, which should be either free or heavily subsidised.
If not, there is always an unsecure wireless network you can “borrow” nearby in big cities. Also you’ll be able to use the interwebs for free in your Uni library, and they’ll probably have wireless hotspots scattered around the campus.
If mummy and daddykins are paying for everything, then get one of 3G mobile cards (plugs into your laptop’s pcmcia slot), but if it’s coming out of your pocket, save the money for something more worthwhile.
check out 3
£15 per month for mobile internet. just plug the modem into a usb port and something like 10gb per month allowance.
and yea you should have a connection at uni available.
My friend has this USB modem that you just plug in and your connected! It’s great and quite cheap. It with 3 btw. Check it out :]
BE CAREFUL!! There was a recent case of a mother getting a £3k bill from her mobile company because her son connected through her mobile.
I’m sure your Uni will have wi fi and I doubt it will cost much if anything
didnt you hear about that bloke who had a 40 grand mobile phone bill for conecting his laptop to the net via his mobile??..it can be done but you MUST double check download limits..some are only a few meg…uni should have wifi if your laptod doesnt have it built in£10 should buy you a dongle..check with the it department and they will advise..you COULD conect vai unsercured wirless, but withouit permition its classed as broadband theft and you could be arrested and charged…its a funny old world aint it?…
Buy a dongle or wi-fi card, most Unis have wi-fi access, but if you buy a dongle you can wi-fi through a mobile. Three(3) do a wi-fi package for around £15 a month.
You have two options I think.
1: If your Laptop has wifi, (most do now) you should be OK to access the Internet via that. Make sure you select a secure site though, it is NOT a good idea to “piggy back” somebody else’s connection as this is illegal.
2: Change your Mobile contract. I think Vodafone do a plug in adaptor so you can access the Internet via your Mobile. (It may be a different company). Hope this helps some way.
